About

Up-On-The-Hill Farm is the legacy of generations of the family’s farmers in the Natural Well area of Alleghany County. Nestled on the top of a ridge and surrounded by beautiful mountain scenery, the farm is a prime example of minimal impact farming of produce for locals to enjoy year-round. The owners, both active members of the Master Gardeners of the Alleghany Highlands, have successfully combined their years of experience to produce vegetables that exemplify what naturally-grown really means. Local consumers and restaurants enjoy the finest of all kinds of produce and herbs, from asparagus to zucchini and everything in between – all fresh, pesticide- and chemical-free.

Also producers of beef, pork, and turkey jerky, and “Family Bacon” cured pork loins in the farm’s Commonwealth of Virginia certified kitchen. “Absolutely the BEST beef jerky and peanut brittle I have EVER tasted!!! Since I live in NC, I will definitely be trying to get John and Deb to mail me some more in the very near future!!! Keep up the good work!” Jim C., Raleigh, NC.

Secret recipe Virginia peanuts-based brittle made on the farm is a highly sought after treat in this area. “Just back from the doctor with my 87 year old mom. Something is wrong with her jaw. She could only eat soup for lunch. She said it hurt too bad to even eat tuna salad. However, when we got home she managed to eat a piece of your peanut brittle!!!! How is that for a recommendation?! My oldest daughter also liked it. She said, “I’m not crazy about peanut brittle but I like that.” Kate W., Harrisonburg, VA.

As a matter of interest, the current family homestead, built between 1795 and 1800, (still occupied by family members), is the oldest brick structure still standing in Alleghany County. Visitors are always welcome to come to Up-On-The-Hill Farm to experience naturally grown farming at its best.
